Grouper

Grouper – Epinephelinae

Groupers belong to the subfamily Epinephelinae within the family Serranidae, which also includes sea basses. While not all serranids are called groupers, the name usually applies to species in the large genera Epinephelus and Mycteroperca, as well as smaller genera such as Anyperidon, Cromileptes, Dermatolepis, Gracila, Saloptia, and Triso. Species of the genus Plectropomus are commonly referred to as coral groupers. Known for their robust bodies, large mouths, and often impressive size, groupers are key predators on coral reefs and make striking subjects for underwater photography.
