The fan mussel (Pinna nobilis) is the largest bivalve mollusc in the Mediterranean Sea. It features symmetrical, triangular shells with a reddish mother-of-pearl interior and a heavily encrusted exterior. This species lives anchored vertically in sandy bottoms or within Posidonia oceanica meadows, at depths ranging from 3–4 meters to over 30 meters. It can reach a maximum length of 90 centimeters.
