A Pearly Razor Fish (Xyrichthys novacula), also known as a Cleaver Wrasse, glides above a sandy bottom, ready to vanish beneath if threatened.

The Pearly Razor Fish (Xyrichthys novacula), also known as the Cleaver Wrasse, is a striking marine species recognized by its compressed body and steeply sloped head. Its long dorsal fin extends nearly the full length of its body. Often found gliding close to sandy or muddy sea bottoms or Neptune grass meadows at depths between 4 to 50 meters, it has a unique defensive behavior—burrowing instantly into the sand when threatened. Reaching up to 30 cm in length, this elusive fish is both fascinating and graceful in its natural habitat.
