Megalithic Temples

The Megalithic Temples of Malta are a series of prehistoric structures, some listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, built in three distinct periods between roughly 3600 BC and 700 BC. Often described as the oldest free-standing monuments on Earth, they showcase unique local innovation in prehistoric architecture. Highlights include the Ġgantija temples (3600–3000 BC) and the grand Tarxien complex, which remained in use until around 2500 BC. These sites stand as enduring stone records of Malta’s ancient cultural evolution.
