HMS Stubborn

HMS Stubborn – S-Class Submarine Wreck, Malta

HMS Stubborn was one of 67 S-Class submarines built during WWII. Of these, 29 were scrapped, 20 were lost in combat, 12 were sold to other navies and later dismantled, 4 were canceled, and 2 were scuttled – one of them being HMS Stubborn. Built by Cammell Laird & Co. of Birkenhead, UK, she was launched on 11 November 1942 as pennant number P238. At 66 meters in length, she was armed with 13 x 21-inch torpedoes (six bow tubes and one stern tube), a 3-inch deck gun in front of the conning tower, and a 20 mm Oerlikon machine gun at the stern. She carried a crew of 44–48 men, initially under Lieutenant Duff, and later, in 1944, under Lieutenant Davies.

HMS Stubborn served with distinction in the North Sea and Baltic Sea, enduring challenging missions in harsh and dangerous waters. In 1946, following the war, she was scuttled off Qawra Point, Malta, where her wreck now rests as a silent reminder of the service of British submariners during WWII.
