Imperial Eagle

Imperial Eagle – Historic Ferry Wreck, Malta

Built in 1938 in England and originally named New Royal Lady, this 45-meter-long ferry could carry 70 passengers and 10 cars. In 1958 she arrived in Malta as Crested Eagle and was shortly after renamed Imperial Eagle, serving as a ferry between Marfa (Malta) and Mgarr (Gozo). In her later years, the vessel transported livestock and cargo between Valletta and Mgarr.

In November 1995, the Imperial Eagle was scuttled as part of a planned marine park off Qawra, where she now rests at a depth of 42 meters. Today, the wreck is a well-known dive site and a preserved piece of Malta’s maritime history.
