Scorpionfish

Scorpionfish – Scorpaenidae

Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) are a family of marine fish that include some of the most venomous species in the world. Their sharp spines, coated with venomous mucus, serve as a natural defense. With hundreds of species, scorpionfish are widespread in tropical and temperate seas, most abundant in the Indo-Pacific. Masters of camouflage, they blend seamlessly with reefs and rocky seabeds, making them both fascinating and challenging subjects for underwater photography. They should not be confused with cabezones (Scorpaenichthys), which belong to the related Cottidae family.
