Pilchard – Clupeidae
Pilchards, also commonly known as sardines, are small, oily fish in the herring family Clupeidae. The name “sardine” has been used in English since the 15th century and is believed to originate from the island of Sardinia, where these fish were once found in abundance. Known for their silvery bodies and schooling behavior, pilchards remain iconic symbols of coastal marine life and are a popular subject for underwater photography.
