Mullets

Mullets – Red and Grey Species

This album features both red mullets, or surmullets (Mullus barbatus and Mullus surmuletus), and grey mullets (Mugilidae). Red mullets are commonly found in the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and eastern Atlantic, with M. surmuletus recognized by its striped first dorsal fin. Grey mullets, by contrast, belong to a separate family of ray-finned fish with about 78 species worldwide, many inhabiting coastal and even freshwater environments. Mullets have been valued as a food source since Roman times and remain iconic in Mediterranean marine life. Their distinct forms and behaviors make them fascinating subjects for underwater photography.
