Overview
The Canon DIGITAL IXUS 120 IS (also known as Canon PowerShot SD940 IS in some regions) was released in 2009 as a slim, stylish point-and-shoot aimed at everyday convenience. Compact and lightweight, it easily slipped into a pocket or dive bag, making it a natural travel companion. We used it extensively in an Ikelite underwater housing, where it proved reliable and easy to handle.

While it didn’t quite match the brilliant sharpness and color depth of its predecessor in our collection, the Canon PowerShot A630, it offered greater portability, optical image stabilization, and a 28mm wide-angle lens — a welcome addition for underwater scenes and travel photography.

Image Quality
The 12.1MP CCD sensor delivers bright, well-exposed images in good light with pleasing colors. Underwater, especially in shallower waters, it produces crisp shots, though fine detail is a touch softer than with the A630. The wider 28mm angle makes framing coral reefs or close subjects much easier.

Ease of Use
This is a true point-and-shoot — minimal setup, intuitive controls, and ready to go. The dedicated Underwater Mode optimizes white balance for aquatic environments, while optical image stabilization helps reduce motion blur both on land and below the surface.

Strengths

  • Ultra-compact, lightweight design

  • 28mm wide-angle lens — great for underwater and travel shots

  • Optical Image Stabilization for steadier images

  • Good color reproduction in daylight and underwater

  • Underwater Mode for better blue/green balance

Weaknesses

  • Slightly less sharp than the PowerShot A630

  • Noise visible at ISO 400+

  • Limited manual controls

  • Shorter battery life than AA-powered cameras

Underwater Use
In the Ikelite housing, the IXUS 120 IS handled dives and snorkeling with ease. Its compact size and wide-angle capability were particularly useful for close encounters with marine life, and Underwater Mode made colors more natural without heavy editing.

Verdict
The Canon DIGITAL IXUS 120 IS proved to be a stylish, travel-friendly camera that served us well in both everyday use and underwater photography. While we missed the razor-sharp detail of the A630, the convenience, portability, and stabilization features made it a worthy and enjoyable part of our camera journey.
